What if the World dealt in Cash Only

Speak to any businessman and his only grouse will be that markets are down and that payments are not coming in time and therefore business is suffering.

Now consider the impact of this situation.  The businessman has sold most of his goods on credit to his customers.  The customers, probably retailers, have sold the goods in c5ash but have diverted the sales proceeds to either buy more stock or for buying property, investing in shares, children’s education, health and medical expenses, house renovation, investment in equity, mutual funds or to buy insurance.

While the money has changed hands and has moved ahead, the people in the chain behind have got stuck.  The wholesaler who sold his goods is not able to buy more stock because he himself does not have enough capital for that purpose.  Despite repeated follow-ups, he is not able to recover his money.

Again there are two possible scenarios – either he will buy more goods on additional credit (he will avail credit because he has been a good customer but has not utilised his credit goodwill so far) and then when the credit period is over, he defaults on payment.  Or he will draw upon his personal or business savings which can cause uncertainty of the family’s future financial security.  The other option with him is to utilise additional credit facilities from Banks or Financial Institutions.  The second option will be the last resort but it
comes with an additional cost of credit.  This additional cost of doing business will be passed on to his customer as cost of goods, thereby increasing the selling price leading to further inflationary trends.

What is happening here is that the cycle is getting disrupted somewhere and the chain is not moving further.

On the contrary, if the world only dealt in cash, the world would be a better place.  Yes, this is wishful but realistic and positive thinking approach to doing business.

Possible scenarios if the world dealt in cash basis only:
  • there would be no defaults; no successful businessmen would be reduced from riches to rags;
  • lesser amount of time spent by businessmen/entrepreneurs on pursuing defaults to recover their funds;
  • cost of credit would drastically go down;
  • trade and commerce would flourish; also new entrepreneurs would easily enter into business and entry barriers would be reduced;
  • businessmen would buy and sell with confidence;
  • Businessmen/entrepreneurs, business sectors, corporates and industries, states, countries would never ever witness a recessionary period;
  • Banks and Financial institutions would have lower rate of defaulters (the wilful defaulters would in any case default on payments) because the chain would continue;
  • Even in the event of a global crisis situation (wars, regional conflicts, draughts, famines and other unforeseen situations, no party in the trade cycle would be affected.  There would be no problems with “balance of payment situations”.
It is therefore advisable in the interest of the economy to switch to “cash basis” and the world can be saved from doom.

With best regards,

CONNECT THE DOTS TO PLOT THE DOTS AHEAD

You will vividly remember having skidded on a Banana Peel (this is more popular in India) or having stumbled upon something while walking on a road or walkway.  You do get up and collect yourself but what everyone does (without having been trained to do so) is to look behind to see what happened, where it happened and why it happened.  You also take cognizance of the consequences, had not not managed to control the fall in time and limit the impact of the incident. You make mental notes of it and store it in your long term memory.  The next time, when you see a Banana peel lying in your path or an uneven surface or a stumbling block, you will automatically recall that event and put it to good use.

The words “Connect the Dots” has been made popular by two famous personalities, viz. Steve Jobs and Rashmi Bansal and there is abundance of truth in it.  We cannot repair the past but we can certainly look back to introspect, learn and move forward and be wiser than before.

The rules that are applied for performance appraisal of Human Resources in corporates apply here too.  Performance appraisal of employees in an organisation is an effective tool to review the past performance, give constructive and developmental feedback, undertake course correction, and then plan the objectives for the next performance period.

In life too, it is important to look at the trail that we have left behind, map the various points which have led to success, which have resulted in failures, which only gave lessons, identify the lowest as well as the peak periods.  When these are reviewed in totality, you get a picture which will reflect the journey you have covered so far.

Man has been gifted with this unique ability to plan ahead.  Only when you have complete information about your professional and personal accomplishments, your portfolio of qualities, skills, attitude, behaviour, your knowledge, your good and bad experiences, what has worked for you and what has not, you are fully equipped to plan for the next stage in life – whether you want to leapfrog to your next objective or you want to take each step cautiously, whether you want to gain more experience and knowledge or whether you want to take a different route altogether.

Animals too have been gifted with this strong instinct and they also use their memory to connect the dots.  I have seen on  umpteen documentaries on Discovery and Animal Planet channels how a young mother teachers her cubs to pounce upon their prey and how they keep on continuously learning from all their previous experiences to achieve that flawless performance in attacking their target and making it their next meal.

It is, therefore, very important to connect the dots to plot the dots ahead.  Plotting the dots becomes easier only when you have data about their past experiences.  For this you can depend on your memory or you can maintain a diary, a log or use some tool to record the events in life.  They also can be in pictorial form where you have photographs of each and every event which brings back fresh memories of all those milestones you have covered in life.

Plotting the dots ahead is relevant in all aspects of a person’s life – right from acquiring higher education, to finding the life partner, right job, family life, family events like birthdays, marriages, grand children, professional life, social life, retirement, sports, holidays and recreation, fitness, investments, property, and so on.  The journey then becomes easy because you know very well where you are going.  There are no blind spots, no half-baked measures, no doubts, no ambiguity.  You don't have to stop at each milestone to plan to reach the next one.  The journey is smooth.  You know fully well what distance you have to cover, how it is to be covered, what resources will be required, how much time will be required and what kind of terrain would you come across.  Once you know that you will be travelling on smooth roads, you will be less concerned and your mind will enjoy the journey.  But assume for a moment that you have set out for a smooth journey and not anticipated a river crossing, a gorge, or a mountainous region.  You will have to slow down, halt, go back halfway to take another route which will result in loss of time and delay in the achievement of your goals.

However, if you know that your journey will cover various landscapes (it is like travelling across India where there are desserts, mountainous regions, dense forests, backwaters as in Kerala, rain forests, hot and humid zones, icy mountains, etc. etc.) you will certainly equip yourself with all the tools, resources that may be required to continue your journey should there be surprises, short diversions, breakdowns, delays.  Plotting the dots helps you to plan for every thing and the picture becomes very clear in your mind.  When you see a picture of your goal, you start living it day in and day out and that becomes your mission in life.  Having a Mission in life is what drives you to the achievement of your goals.

One of the quotes which aptly sums up is “If you fail to plan, you have planned to fail”.

Best wishes.

India Going Full Steam Ahead

The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi is giving what people were all the time desirous of.  He has given so many mantra’s and people are lapping it up happily.  He is showing the people of India that there is hope.  There is hope for a better life, hope for a good environment to live in, hope for prosperity and economic progress.  People are fed up of living within financial constraints.  The world has become aspirational about India and what I can do it it explores and nurtures it own potential, its demographic dividend, its natural resources and putting to good use the educational institutions and institutes of higher learning.  While the India’s rich have aspirations to conquer and dominate the world stage, the poor want to do more than just survive.  They want to have a share of the prosperity and rightfully so.

The Prime Minister’s mantras are not new but their coinage is effective.  It throws a spell and people are falling in awe.  But if you take a deep look, they have a lot of meaning attached to it.  Speed, Skill and Scale was one which describes the way India should go ahead if it has to, forget the outer world and become and economic superpower, help India’s population to prosper internally.  Even if they do business internally within India with this mission, they will achieve great heights.  This mission statement has lot of deeper meaning to it because we have now got very used to the “Chalta hai” (it’s okay, who cares) kind of attitude.

The “Chalta hai”, attitude indicates that:
  1. It’s okay, we will do it at our own pace. The deadline given to customer is not important.
  2. It's okay to compromise on the materials than that shown or assured to the client;
  3. It's okay to compromise on the quality, fit and finish. A cover up job will hide the defects and customer will not come to know about it;
  4. It's okay to compromise on the workmanship. (there are too many customers and we have to expedite delivery.)  We will never hire the required manpower to complete the job and therefore, the final product will not be anywhere close to the original or sample that was shown to the client, based on which the order was received.
  5. It's okay to do some additional cheating - you go back on the agreed terms.  If delivery was promised, you refute the terms and tell the customer that he has to collect the delivery from the workshop or the factory.
The basic premises is that the customer will never know what we have not given him and since he is in dire need of the product, he will not have time to return the product or goods and therefore, we do not have to worry about anything.  Also, if the customer if very keen on adherence to the terms, we do not expect him to to be our repeat customer in any case because we don't want such troublesome customer, so any poor quality product or service will do, and so on.

This "Chalta Hai" attitude has to change first and foremost, and has to change fast.  If not, it will affect our image at the global level.  It already has created a negative impact and Indian's are considered as no compromising on quality, fit and finish.

The other impact will be that people will seek products from foreign countries which will discourage domestic production and lead to outflow of valuable foreign currency.  Indians have earlier been crazy about Japanese, British and American products.  Then for a brief period we saw a demand for Indian products rise and now worldwide, Chinese products have conquered the market.  Name the product and you will see a Chinese product.  The consequences of low share of domestic production has domino effect are many and countries like the USA and some other western countries and seeing the consequences of having low local manufacturing industry.

Combined with the “Make in India” Mantra, the “Speed, Skill and Scale” concept have the potential to take India to the next level in terms of its own economic progress.  The market in India is huge and products that are manufactured in India will be consumed here itself.  So finding a market for products and consumption is not an issue at all.

Manufacturing has to pick up and for that to happen, the government must ease the norms for doing business.  In the coming days, it would be interesting to see how the plans unfold.  Much has been said about what should be done and what has not been done.  But now is the time for the government machinery to work together, iron out the differences, work in synergy with each other.  The Prime Minister must ensure that the Speed, Scale and Skill mantra must start from the government departments first.  The scale is there in terms of the huge number of employees (here we will not question their performance), the format and structure is there.  They need to deliver things with SPEED.  How the Prime Minister brings in accountability of the government agencies will be interesting to see.  The PM and his office may have control over the Central Government ministries and they may be able to drive it in mission mode, but when it comes to the machinery at the State and Municipal level, it may collapse completely.

I am left wondering as to why previous governments could not think of all these simple aspects all the while they were in office. India could have achieved so much progress by now.  These kind of confidence building activities do not require legislative procedures and the opposition would have been easily floored.

This gives rise to another aspect about application of creativity in political field has become very important.  Creativity was the domain of artists in the field of fine arts, advertising and related fields of mass communication.  The Prime Minister has shown that just by being creative, so much can be dreamt of first and then achieved.  There is positivity in the environment, stock market is bullish, globally oil prices are on the decline, whole price index and inflation seem to be steadying or maintaining ground, people are talking about it and there is positive energy flowing all around.

Although so far nothing on the ground level has changed yet but people are hoping that it will, very soon.

Indians are looking up with hope for a better tomorrow.

Breaking Free – Realise Your Potential

Very often, when you go to the fuel station, you see a young man who is checking the pressure of your car’s tyre.  In another instance, you find a poor old man repairing car batteries and you have seen him doing the same thing every since your childhood.  You know because you belong to that locality or have been passing through the location day in and day out. Over a period of years, you will still see the young man at the fuel station, but now looking old, frustrated, uninterested, not responding to the random conversation that you try to strike with him.

You see a hand cart puller who has migrated from a rural country side and he spends his entire life time doing the same thing.  Finally, he gets worn out.  Gets completely disillusioned with life.  The same is the story with millions of people, not only in India, but about around the world.  After all the toil and hardwork, he is not able to make ends meet.  He is not able to save money to provide for a better future for his children and family.  They continue to exist in poverty and will die in poverty.  He sees people enjoying the luxuries of life but he cannot afford them.  He can only think about them.  Dreaming is beyond his capacity.

What is the problem?
Why could they not succeed in life?

Here by the use of the word “success”, I mean being able to make a modest living, being able to enjoy the fruits of life, being able to create a future better than the existing one.  It means that elevating one’s status in life – from the one that we are born into to a better one.

There are umpteen examples of people who have transformed their lives completely.  They are living a life which they had never imagined in their wildest of dreams.  They have not only uplifted themselves but they have been able to uplift the lives of their family members, relatives and create employment for a couple of others.

A huge percentage of such people start liking what they do. They get into the comfort zone.  Over a period of years, they become seniors and become their bosses favourites.  The boss starts trusting them with the business, who in turn is looking for more greener pastures, growing his business.  The employee feels that he has a huge responsibility.  He thinks that the boss or owner will not be able to survive without him.  The boss is also revered in the family as their benefactor.

How wrong he is? He lives in an illusory work, where he thinks that every aspect of business revolves around him.  The boss marginally increases his salary every year and he is full of gratitude, and feels that his talent has been recognised.

Suddenly there is a financial crisis in the worker’s family and he needs huge financial assistance. He approaches his boss who refuses to entertain any such request.  All earlier assurances of financial support in the event of an emergency are forgotten.  The boss has been spending money lavishly buy every luxury item but denies having any spare money to pay for his small financial need.  This leads to an argument and finally he is shown in place.  He feels humiliated and is shattered to pieces.  On an impulse, he quits because the realisation has now sunk in.  Now instead of one, there are not one but two critical situations.  The one that already exists in the family and the new that has been created because of it.

By the time he realises that all his loyalty, his trust has gone in vain, it is too late in life.  He has withered, aged, demoralised, disillusioned and left with no hope.

Had the person realised that it is not wise to stick to one employer, had he changed jobs frequently for a reason on good terms, had he benefited by an increase in salary or compensation every time he changed a job, he would have been better off in life now than he is.  This is because he did not take a risk, he did not move out of his comfort zone.  He felt that this was the world for him and no other world existing outside it.  He has seen the world move past by him but he failed to recognise or notice it.  He was blinded by his inaction.  He became stuck to his job.  He became egoistic.  He felt like he was the King.

There are innumerable instance of people falling in this category.

My advice to you, and which management experts and management sages have already said before me:

  • You need to get out of your comfort zone every now and then.  Even water, when it settles down, stagnates and starts to breed mosquitoes and soon begins stinking.
  • Life-Long employment is now a myth.  It may assure you of guaranteed work and compensation but your future growth will be stifled.  I am not saying that you should change jobs very frequently, i.e. of very short term durations but when you grow out of your job, think of changing to a new job – learn new tasks, new business, acquire new skills.  What is now being circulated in social media is that 15 years of experience (probably in the same job) means 1 years experience multiplied by 14 years.
  • There is a lot of creativity that is waiting to be applied.  Do not kill it.  You do not know the potential of your idea.  The popular punch line of a popular Telecom company in India goes by “An idea can change your life”.
  • Hidden somewhere in every person is an entrepreneur.  You have to move out of the “employee” mentality to an “entrepreneurial” mentality.  But who said it is easy? It’s not at all easy but it’s not impossible either.  The important thing is – have you even thought about it? Have you even attempted to prepare for it?
  • Why did you not have a dream? Or, if you had a dream, why didn’t you pursue it?  Did you even speak to anyone about it? Did you even share your ideas? Who knows, someone in a similar situation as yours would have offered you the support in the area of your weakness and the problem could have been solved.

Zig Ziglar has very beautifully said and I quote “Those who won’t take a chance, don’t have a chance”.  Robin Sharma says and I quote “Cash off your chains, cut the shackles and shatter your limits”.

Explore and realise the potential that has been gifted to you.  We are here to make the world a better place then when we were born.  Our world begins with our parents, our family, our children, our neighbours.  When you have accomplished bettering all these, then you can think of focusing on better things.

Best Wishes.

Sustaining Positivity Throughout the New Year

As with every 31st of December and the 1st of January when the calendar year changes, it brings with it new hopes, new expectations, new vigour and both the individuals as well as corporates look forward to the ensuing year with enthusiasm in the hope that the unhappy events of the year gone by will not repeat themselves and that this will be a new beginning.

In my opinion, people are looking at new experiences, with the anticipation that they will be able to utilise their experience to counter the challenges of the new year.

Actually, it is only an event in our lives.  At the end of every day, week, month, a new set of events are planned to unfold but we never celebrate them.  We tend to collect our good and bad memories, pile them up in a stack and then look behind to connect the dots.  What we learn from them, some pleasant and some unpleasant, give us hope and expectation to build the New Year.

What happens in the process is that the new bride becomes the home-maker and she soon settles down to her new life.  Likewise, we too forget that we are in the New Year and that we should be high in spirits (not the alcohol) type, and that we must remain buoyant and not let our expectations die down so soon but we soon get used to the daily chores that we forget that we are not to let our disappointments, disagreements, failures, miseries to pull us down.  Remind yourself every day that nothing – you will not allow anything to demoralise you and that the year ahead is still full of hope and expectations.

Therefore, observe the following:

  • When you get up in the morning, say a BIG HI! To yourself! Say it loudly so that others may be able to hear you clearly.  It will not only energise you but will energise everybody around you.  It will bring a smile on their faces.  Initially, your behaviour may appear as strange but when they start observing you over a period of time, you will be able to hear them reciprocate with a smile on their faces.  Who knows, you might just bring some energy into their dull and boring lives.
  • When you return home, tell people positive stories about how your day has been.  Share with your family what has not gone well with you during the day but do not emphasise on it too much.  Talk about the event but do not discuss who was responsible or its impact.  However, you must close the talk with the positives again so that a positive environment is created else people will go to bed with worries on their mind and will lose sleep.
  • Do not forget that with the passing of every day, it is only a day, 24 hours, 1440 minutes, 86,400 seconds have passed and you will be blessed with a similar amount of second, minutes and hours will be gifted to you tomorrow.  However, it is important not to carry a hangover of the previous day or you might end up wasting a fresh new day with the same worries. It is akin to wearing a blind fold and entering in a new day, not being able to see the opportunities that the new day brings to you.

  • At the end of the day, make a list of things you want to do the next day so that you have a clear road-map of how you want to utilise the new day.  If you don’t follow this, you will lose time, thinking about the events gone by and not being able to focus on the day ahead of you.

Do share your thoughts on the four broad suggestions proposed above

Never Underestimate the Potential of your Big Idea!

Introduction

Scientists and Psychologists believe that every day, every hour, every minute, every second, every millionth of a second, thousands of thoughts flash in our mind.  It is difficult to remember each and every thought or an idea.  Similarly, when you see something, an idea generates in our mind and we let go of it because we don’t bother thinking much about it.  We try and focus on the important and trivial issues at hand and let go of an important idea that can change our lives.

Let me give you a few examples of when we get ideas:

  • We see that here is an opportunity and nothing is being done about it;
  • We see something that is being done somewhere else and the same thing is not available locally within your community;
  • We see something that is not being done well;
  • We see something that can there is a potential in furthering the process and creating a product or service which will be helpful;
  • We see something and remember that somewhere else, somebody is doing something which if added together can lead to some wonderful product or service

Let me tell you that the world today has progressed based on such ideas which have been inspired by looking at someone at some place or identified a need that could be fulfilled locally.  There are thousands of products and services today which are based on such examples.

What you need is to capture that thought and not let go of it. You don’t know what social and financial benefits you could reap from it.  Experts have written about how to jot down your thoughts and therefore I will not dwell up on it.  What I would like to tell you is that you must give your thoughts some consideration before you move it to your brain’s trash can.  If you apply basic principles of thinking forward and imagining the dots, you may be able to visualise the huge potential of your idea.  Well, the time for some ideas may not have arrived yet and therefore, it is not reason enough to dump it.  Keep the idea alive and when the moment you think is right, strike the hammer.

When you have been thinking about an idea or a solution for a long time and feel very strongly about it, believe me, someday soon you will feel the strong urge to carry it forward, give it shape or materialise it.  Most people who are employed get ideas and inspiration to fill in the gap that their current employer is not fulfilling and want to take it forward but their “being employee-mentality”  does not allow them to break-free.  Yet, there have been examples of “employees” leaving their jobs to pursue their dreams, inspirations, solutions and ideas.

Here, let me put in a word of caution.  Not all ideas will be worth the effort and consideration.  But those ideas or solutions that your heart feels strongly about it need to be pursued with complete dedication and commitment.

So, if you have a dream, an idea, a solution, a need that your product or service could fill in or you are flooded with such ideas every day, then someone higher up wants you to take the bull by the horn and take charge.  The onus then is clearly on you.  You will be responsible for your state of economic and financial affairs.

The world out there is waiting for your product, your service, your idea, your solution.  You do not have to start big.  But as I mentioned in one of my earlier articles, courage is required.  Take the first step and the world is out there to follow you!

Find Courage Within Yourself

Most often, the cause of failure of many budding entrepreneurs with lots of potential is due to the lack of courage to take the first step.  Agreed, the first step is the most difficult but all you require to do is to muster enough courage to move forward.

Lot has been written about taking the first step but I’ve discovered that it can be made easy.  Now, most people would advise you some very theoretical aspects but I would suggest something different and very simple.

First of all, you need to think constantly about searching for that one bright spot, a ray of hope.  That ray of hope is very important because that could be your only life line.  Next you need to talk to people with whom you can talk to and share your roadblock.  Believe me, people whom your heart says is OK to talk to are the ones who will readily come forward to help you out. But before that you need to do some homework.  You need to make a list of your problems, identify probably solutions, identify what can go wrong and will go wrong.  Eliminate those choices which will lead to a dead-end and think of favourable solutions.

At first, you may find this to be difficult but remember the difficult part is your mind.  Be strong willed and just imagine how much benefit it will lead to and it will perhaps encourage you to move ahead with determination and confidence.

Remember the following:

  • Fear is in your mind
  • It is not permanent
  • Taking the first step may be difficult but easy too.
  • Share your problems with people and they will be willing to offer help
  • Constantly think of solutions
  • Make a list of problems you can encounter
  • Think of the benefits that will accrue and it will encourage you

Finally, Fred Van Amburgh rightly states “All the advice in the world will never help you until you help yourself”.
